I discovered that I must research and understand the entire system and process, problem solve with my team, and share lessons learned. This was due to incorrect contribution amounts, the system not finding an account, or invalid employer data. These system errors increased our backlog and costs, and delayed enrollments.

Over the years I’ve worked alongside a number of enterprise product managers in many companies. How the customer would like to buy the software (the biggest pitfall in my experience for enterprise products). I call this “building enterprise software while bypassing customer requirements at scale”.

Often, this is due to resource constraints rather than a lack of understanding of a PM role. Once the themes (aka feature groups) are defined, it becomes easier to think through the features that falls under various themes. This could also be due to stringent processes or lack of the same. Airtable and most simply on excel.

Management often believes that poor strategy can be made up by iterating/or pivoting execution, where operational expenditures are relatively low as compared to capital-intensive enterprises. In my company, we review a living document with our management chain on a quarterly basis to align business direction for the short-term (immediate one to two quarters) to the long-term (two to five years). No formal stakeholder review as this is meant to be the first version that will undergo many iterations and refinements.
