Guest post by Dave Crenshaw Think back to when you were a kid in about third grade. You’ve been in the classroom the better part of the day and a draining feeling would start to occur.
The ideas of Agile are great. It’s the way it has been codified into rituals and certifications, and rolled out mindlessly that misses the point. When people talk about Lean, the conversation often ends at process optimization, waste, and quality , and misses so much of what the Lean mindset offers. Design Thinking is held high as the new magic trick of design facilitators.
Planning Horizons and Planning Model. “Bring me that horizon,” says Jack Sparrow at the end of the movie The Curse of the Black Pearl while steering his pirate ship into the open waters. While Jack may seek freedom rather than the line that separates earth from sky, he could easily determine how far it is—there is only one physical horizon on our planet, and the distance can be calculated using a standard formula.

Get great at doing research and customer development. If you aren’t used to talk with people and doing research for your product you are more likely to just be a project manager. I would say that getting great at research, really any/all types, is a key skill as the industry moves forward.

Most B2B organizations get started the same way. They identify a niche problem and develop a solution. Then they do it again, and again. This formula might work for years. But eventually products commoditize, markets shift and the law of diminishing returns kicks in. The ideal time to re-route your growth strategy is before your growth starts to taper off.
In one of the keynotes of this year’s MTP Engage Hamburg, Johanna Kollmann reviews established system thinking concepts and applies them to the world of today’s product management. Johanna explains that everything around us is a system: Our development teams are a system and our products become one as soon as users interact with them… and systems can be mapped and modelled in incredibly powerful ways.

The Parable. On June 26, 2017, English football team Crystal Palace enthusiastically announced the appointment of the great Dutch defender Frank de Boer as its new manager. Admittedly he was joining after a disappointing spell in Italy, but his success with the Dutch champions, Ajax, with whom he won the Champions League four consecutive times, was heralded as the template for his vision at Crystal Palace.

According to the agile process made famous by Spotify: Think it – Build it – Ship it – Tweak it — before programmers turn a hand to coding, every solution is better to diagram and think out visually. And the quicker you do it, the faster you can start iterations and achieve the first results. […]. The post 4 new features for diagramming appeared first on RealtimeBoard Blog.

If you follow web development at all, there's a good chance that you saw Kamran Ahmed 's roadmap to becoming a web developer in 2017. It's a giant mind map / flow chart describing all the technologies used today to build the web, broken down into front-end, back-end, and devops. If the font and style look familiar, they should! He created it using Balsamiq Mockups, a tool he says he "can't live without.".

Savvy product managers use platforms. This episode focuses on platforms — a topic I haven’t discussed yet on this podcast. An effective platform strategy is important for growing organizations as well as those that are starting. There are different perspectives on platforms and this interview primarily explores digital platforms. My guest is Larry Keeley, a strategist who has worked for over three decades to develop effective innovation methods, based in science and analytics.
What are some things product management can do to exert more influence and demonstrate stronger leadership? Most product management professionals readily admit they spend too much time in the weeds on tasks that, at the end of the day, don’t contribute much to the overall mission of the organization. Here are three things product management professionals can do to be more effective doing what they’re paid to do – managing the organization’s primary source of revenue — it
When I started this newsletter I aimed to maintain a few-times-monthly pace, and I did quite well through the first year and a half. Alas, vacations, work, millennial thinkpieces, and the horror of national and global catastrophes took their toll and I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus. I.
Over the last two years, there’s been a 76 percent increase in AI adoption across sales organizations. The reason for its rise? AI increases teams’ productivity by predicting and automating actions that require manual effort. In other words, the research that takes reps hours, AI can do in seconds. For sales teams, AI opens up a world of new possibilities, including automating outreach, identifying best-fit buyers, and keeping CRMs flush with fresh data.
Theranos is in bad shape, but they have introduced a new product Image Credit: Wikipedia. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you’ve probably heard about a company called Theranos. They are a Silicon Valley startup that attracted a lot of attention. They claimed that they had invented a product that with just a minute amount of blood from an individual could run a large number of health tests.
This morning I felt I might be wasting 8 people's day by putting them into a pressure pot doomed for failure. It's day two of our first design sprint at Tes, I was unconvinced of today's schedule, two and a half hours of putting people on the spot to give ad hoc lightening talks and capture the “big idea”. Is it fair to do this with no preparation? Are there any big ideas?
Here’s what makes solutions-driven product management such a challenge. The vast majority of product companies are a mishmash of products brought together through mergers and/or acquisitions. Each one throws another silo into the fire that further fragments strategies, product plans, R&D, marketing and sales. The $64,000 question is, “how do you transform multiple disparate products into business solutions to achieve a whole that’s more valuable than the sum of the parts?

One day into the design sprint and as the facilitator I am exhausted. Facilitating day one of the design sprint demanded a lot of energy, but like other things that require high effort it was great fun! I made a few mistakes, the most annoying being a rookie error - my watch battery ran out in the morning (note to self charge fitbit)! The team, made up from cross function and cross business unit at Tes arrived on time, the introductions and plan for the week eased everyone into the morning.
Journeys come in all shapes and sizes. Some are short and easy, like a quick weekend getaway, while others are long and arduous, like a multi-week trip to parts unknown. The longer and more complex the journey, the more a plan or a roadmap, literally and figuratively, is needed to ensure success. Any journey starts with some basic questions: Where do I want to go?
