I recently spoke at the Y Oslo conference in Oslo, Norway. We covered how to manage messy opportunity solution trees , the most common challenges teams face when getting started with the discovery habits, what Im working on next, and so much more. Discovery is a team sport. By the team that’s building the product.
It means reducing choices amongst engineering teams and standardizing technology, so our team can spend as much time as possible delivering value to customers. Our chat covers the origins of Run Less Software, how it has evolved at scale, and how it differs from the equally valid approaches of other engineering teams.
And I put together these horrible, bad websites – I’m lucky there’s no evidence of them anymore. I’d love to dive into what those strategies were like, especially first at Atlassian, particularly because they had no sales team. Atlassian does not have an outbound sales team.
On either side, it’s easy to assume bad intent or have this get personal. Almost (Hint: replacing everyone on those teams doesn’t seem to fix the problem.) When prospects say they need something, sales teams mostly take them at their word.
What I did need to do was to find out what their product development definition was and launch a new product. Along the way I meet and made friends with the engineering team. I was placed into an office that I shared with the company’s CTO and their head engineer. The CTO decided that I was not working as hard as he was.
