Traditionally, strategy and execution are often viewed as separate, sequential pieces of work that are carried out by different people. For example, a productmanager might determine the productstrategy and one or more development teams might be tasked with executing it. I call these outcomes product goals.
Before the advent of agile frameworks like Scrum , a product person—the productmanager—would typically carry out the market research, compile a market requirements specification, create a business case, put together product roadmap, write a requirements specification, and then hand it off to a project manager.
I've been reflecting on the last decade in ProductManagement. Not every company has seen all these changes, but by and large I think it's been a positive push forward and I'm proud of where we've come from and where we have gotten to. -- 2014: "I do not need ProductManagers, I can run my company myself,I have the strategy."

As you may know, the product owner originated from Scrum, where the role is responsible for maximising the value the product creates. This sounds like a text-book productmanagement responsibility to me. Additionally, some approaches like SAFe employ a separate productmanager and product owner role.
For the past eight years, I’ve been working with C-Suite leaders at companies big and small to set up their ProductManagement organizations. At all of them, I start understanding the current state of ProductManagement. Having a dedicated career ladder for productmanagers allows them to see their path to the C-Suite.
